Talking Heads – Where the Punk ended & Alternative Music Began

I remember hearing the Talking Heads first while in college many moons ago. A couple of my friends were deejays at the University of Oklahoma. When one of them worked the night shift, we often smoked weed and spun the wildest music we could find to satisfy however many local people and students tuned in to the show. The Talking Heads were college favorites across the United States.

Looking Back on Tom Petty | Music to Sing Along

My wife and I attended a Tom Petty tribute recently. A diverse crowd of white, brown, black, young, and old packed the place. A couple of dozen local artists participated.

What struck me is everybody knew every word to the songs and sang along on each. Tom was a beloved musician who touched people across a far greater demographics than I had imagined, probably why he sold over 80 million records over his musical career.

Check out some of Tom Petty’s best videos/songs.

Willie Nelson – My Favorite Outlaw

Willie Nelson is one of the greatest songwriters and performers since the 1950’s when he began his music career. At 85, Willie still records and performs, and what’s more, he makes magic.

Many musicians owe Willie for his songwriting talents, including Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, B.B. King,  and Thin Lizzy.

Willie also is an actor, point, and author. Nelson, along with Waylon Jennings, was known as “outlaws” because he led a country rebellion, changing the genre forever, for the better.

Santana – His Talking Guitar makes those around him Better

In high school, several of us were listening to Oye Como Va. An annoying guy carried on about how Santana “is the greatest musician ever.”

I retorted: This is the worst shit I’ve ever heard.

In my mind, however, I thought this song and Santana are fantastic. Everything I’ve heard and have learned about Santana since has only confirmed and enhanced my favorable view of him. Great guitarist, bandleader, and performer. Also, a good man. The type of person and musician that people want to be around.

The Temptations – Oldies that Sound Beautiful Today

The Temptations produced hit after hit. While the studios demanded three-minute songs, the group constantly fought to record longer songs such as Papa Was a Rolling Stone

Arguably the best harmonizing group in history, The Temptations’ songs sound as good today as when the group was at their peak. The group had their share of turmoil, but they wrote, sang, recorded, and performed some of the greatest songs in music history.

Rolling Stones – The Anti-Beatles

The Beatles showed up to the United States in suits and ties, looking clean cut.

Not the Rolling Stones.  From day one, the Rolling Stones offered an edgier, wilder, more explosive element to the British Invasion.

If the Beatles initially were guys parents thought they wanted their daughters to date; the Rolling Stones were the guys that made parents want to arm their daughters with chastity belts. Their music lit a fire under the youth of America. Made us want to pump our fists, dance, and tell the older generation to piss off.

Whitney Houston had the Voice of an Angel

Listening to Whitney Houston’s voice is like God making love to your ears.

Forget how the icon fell to earth to become one of America’s great tragedies. Whitney was born with a voice from Heaven, and she blessed us with song after song, album after album, and performance after performance for decades. Her voice and the volume of her work earns her a place among the top 100 best artists of all time.

Marvin Gaye – A Voice made of Gold

Marvin Gaye was born in a quiet storm, destined to become one of the greatest singers in history.

A giant among Motown giants, one can only imagine how many babies were conceived to Let’s Get It On or one of his other masterpieces.

Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield influenced Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Maxwell, Sade, and every R&B and Soul artist to follow.
